The Right AC Filter Schedule for North Texas Dust & Cottonwood

Filter packaging promises 90 days — written for a mild climate with a system that runs a few hours daily. Wichita Falls is not that climate. Spring brings cottonwood fluff and mesquite pollen, dry stretches bring red-clay dust off every plowed field and construction site, and your system runs 2,500+ hours a year pulling all of it through one filter. Around here, the calendar on the box is optimistic fiction.

The Schedule That Works Here

• 1-inch pleated filters: every 30-45 days in cooling season, monthly during cottonwood and dust-storm stretches
• 4-5 inch media cabinets: every 6 months, checked at 4 — dust season still tests them
• Homes with pets: cut any interval by a third — dog hair plus cottonwood is a filter's nightmare
• Stick to MERV 8-11: higher ratings choke airflow on systems not designed for them
• Check monthly regardless: hold it to a light — can't see through it, change it

Dust-Storm Weeks Change Everything

When a spring wind event turns the sky brown, your filter does in days what normally takes weeks. After any serious dust storm, check the filter and the outdoor coil — a condenser wrapped in red dirt can't dump heat, and your electric bill and compressor both pay for it. A gentle hose rinse of the outdoor coil after dust events is the easiest maintenance win in North Texas.
